The use of mini dental implants and bone grafting depends on individual circumstances. If a mini-implant is placed immediately after a tooth extraction, a bone graft is typically used to fill the gaps around the implant. This helps promote faster healing and improves the predictability of the outcome.

In most cases, my preferred approach is to graft the area before implant placement, allowing the bone to heal and create a strong foundation before proceeding with the implant. The body follows a natural “use it or lose it” mechanism when it comes to bone retention. When a tooth is extracted, the socket left behind does not simply fill in with new bone. Instead, the edges of the socket gradually collapse inward, resulting in bone loss and an uneven ridge.

Since soft tissue follows the shape of the underlying bone, this process can affect the symmetry and aesthetics of the smile, especially in the front of the mouth. To prevent this, we perform a bone graft at the time of extraction. This provides the body with the necessary material to rebuild the area properly, ensuring a more stable and aesthetically pleasing outcome when the implant is placed.

Clear Aligners in Atkins: How Alignment Supports Your Oral Health

Human beings are naturally drawn to symmetry. A neatly arranged shelf, a level picture frame, or an evenly aligned smile feels satisfying because our brains process order and symmetry easily. With your teeth, however, alignment also has health benefits. Tooth position can affect where plaque collects, how biting pressure is distributed, and how comfortably your teeth function together. For [...]

What Does Research Say About Laser-Assisted Periodontal Therapy?

Laser-assisted periodontal therapy brings dental laser technology into gum disease treatment, often alongside scaling and root planing. The cleaning part may sound familiar: plaque and hardened calculus are removed from below the gumline and along the tooth roots. But where does the laser come in? Depending on the type of laser, its settings, and the treatment protocol, it may [...]

Mini Denture Implants: What Changes After Your Denture Has a Stronger Foundation?

Mini denture implants give a denture something traditional dentures do not have: a direct connection to the jawbone. We place mini dental implants into the jaw and attach the denture to them, which gives the replacement teeth added retention and stability. Traditional dentures rest on the gums. An upper denture also extends across the roof of the mouth, where [...]

3 Key Questions To Ask Your Implant Dentist

Searching for an implant dentist usually starts with one simple question: “Who should I trust?” Search results can tell you where a practice is located, what services it offers, and how patients rated their experience. They tell you much less about how that dentist approaches treatment or whether they’re the right fit for your needs. Those answers come from [...]

“False teeth” is one of those terms that has never really gone away. Most people use it to describe any replacement for missing teeth, but the phrase covers much more than many realize. Today, it can refer to everything from traditional removable dentures to implant-supported teeth that provide greater stability and function. While these treatments all share the same [...]

Root Canal Treatment: Separating Fact From Fiction

Root canal treatment has one of the most recognizable reputations in dentistry. Some dental treatments come with questions. Root canals come with opinions. Ask ten people what they have heard, and you will probably hear the same stories repeated again and again. Long before many people ever need treatment, they have already formed an impression based on relatives, friends, [...]
