Do You Offer Sedation Dentistry?
In this video, Dr. Aaron Bratton explains how conscious sedation helps patients manage dental anxiety while remaining safe and comfortable during treatment. This method, using a prescribed combination of Ativan and Phenergan, allows for deep relaxation with minimal memory of the procedure. At Atkins Dental Clinic, we are committed to providing care for patients who experience anxiety or phobia related to dental treatment. We utilize treatment approaches that help alleviate discomfort at a deeper level. However, for procedures where gradual exposure therapy is not feasible, we offer conscious sedation as an alternative.
While we do not provide general anesthesia or IV sedation, we do offer oral conscious sedation. This involves a carefully prescribed combination of Ativan and Phenergan. Ativan induces a state of deep relaxation, similar to sleep, while Phenergan helps prevent nausea and has a mild sedative effect. This method allows patients to remain conscious and maintain normal body functions, avoiding the safety concerns associated with IV sedation. However, because of its strong amnesic effect, patients typically do not recall their procedure, reducing anxiety and discomfort.
This sedation approach has proven to be highly effective for patients undergoing major dental procedures. I have even experienced it myself—when my father removed my wisdom teeth, I was given Ativan. I recall the initial injections and assisting him in naming the instruments, but after a certain point, I remembered nothing until I woke up at home.
For patients who prefer to undergo treatment without stress or fear, conscious sedation provides a safe and effective solution. It allows us to complete necessary dental work while ensuring a comfortable and anxiety-free experience.
